The 2027 opening day and EITC date aren't announced yet; these are estimates from the 2026 season (opened 26 January, most EITC/ACTC refunds by 2 March). The IRS announces 2027 dates in January. (EITC/ACTC: Tue, March 2, 2027)
Mistakes, missing forms, identity checks or a refund offset for past-due debts (child support, federal or state debts) make it slower. An amended return (Form 1040-X) takes much longer.

How this is worked out
The estimate starts from the day the IRS begins work on your return: the day you e-file (or opening day, if you send it earlier), or about a week after you mail a paper return. It then adds about 3 weeks for an e-filed return or 6 weeks for a paper one, and moves the date to the early-March EITC/ACTC release if your return claims either credit.
Worked example: the same return sent on February 8, 2027
| How it's filed | Refund around |
|---|---|
| E-file, direct deposit | March 1 |
| E-file, direct deposit, with EITC | March 2 |
| Paper, direct deposit | March 29 |
Good to know
- Your bank may hold a deposit for a day or two after the IRS sends it, and some banks post it a few days early.
- If part of the refund was taken for a past-due debt, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a letter saying how much and to whom.
- IRS Free File opens on opening day for people who qualify, and filing free doesn't make the refund slower.

Questions people ask
Why does my refund say "still being processed"?+
It means the IRS has the return but hasn't approved the refund yet. It's normal for the first weeks; if it stays that way past 3 weeks for an e-filed return, the IRS may be checking something and will write to you.
Will calling the IRS make my refund come faster?+
No. Where's My Refund has the latest information and updates once a day, usually overnight. IRS phone staff can only look into a refund once it's been 21 days since you e-filed, or 6 weeks since you mailed the return.
